| Phal Spike?? Hi everyone, been gone for awhile but I 'm back....lol. I have a question when I was gone on vacation a few weeks last month I came back to this and I just noticed it a couple days ago because it has become obvious I guess. My question is: is the one on the left a spike?

| I think phalaephila is right. I am sure the one on the left (of the picture) is a flower spike. Congratulations.

| I am so glad!!! I so hope it is. This is a 'Golden Leopard'. I love the bloom when it does. This one was a rescue from Lowe's earlier this year.

| they look like roots to me. heres my Phal when it started 2 spikes. The Phal on the left is in double spike the one on the right hasnt flowered in years. I was going to seperate them when I found the spikes. Note the smaller spike on the left side of the plant between the leaves. [IMG] [/IMG] |

| exasperatus2002 : I may be wrong. I think you and digitalgate may have more experience. I have had a few blooms lately and I thought some of them resembled the one on orchid_girl's Phal. I have been wrong a zillion time before ![]()

| Hi all: I am standing firm in the spike category; I have grown and bloomed plenty of phals, and those two growths of yours are very different from each other, at least in that picture. Is there any way to get a photo that is in better focus, perhaps from a different angle? I'll fess up if it turns out I'm wrong.... jeanne |

| Yep, I still believe the one on the left is a spike. The one on the right is definitely a root, and the two are very different from each other. On the root, note that it is very round, all the way to the lighter growing tip. The spike is pointier, sharper. Keep us updated! jeanne |

| I have eight phals in spike right now. Practically every morning I hold them under a bright light and just stare at the new growth.(Sometimes roots will get in the way,but hey--no roots,no flowers) Congratulations ![]() |

| orchid girl, Referring toyour original post in your first pic, the "thing" on the left, coming out fo the leaf crotch is a spike. This is where Phal spikes typically come from. The thicker "thing" in the center is a new root. This is typically where new Phal roots grow from.
