Naming

Dendrobium Laisanthera yellow

does Laisanthera refer to Laelia x with Rananthera?
Or there is more cross than meet the eye?

Hi ~

The spelling I found on OrchidWiz for this plant (a species, not a hybrid) is Den. lasianthera (note the placement of the "i") - looks like a gorgeous plant.

I have a flask of these from Bali, it is in fact a species orchid, therefore as phalaephila correctly wrote "lasianthera' starts with a lower case "L".

The short answer is no, lasianthera is not a cross between Laelia and Renanthera.

To start with, Laelia and Renanthera come from different sections in the family of Orcidacea, Laelias from the Laelinae section and Renanthera from the Vandaceous section. Plants from different sections can not be crossed with one another. In short you'll never see a Laelia/Renanthera cross.

The name lasianthera is a species name. Laelia and Renanthera are generic names (genus names). The species name lasianthera comes from the Greek lasios meaning shaggy or wooly and anthera referring to the column. Dendrobium lasianthera is a member of the genus Dendrobium, not a member fo the genera Laelia or Rananthera.

Also as it is a species name, lasianthera is not capitalized. Also the word "yellow" is not part of the name and shouldn't be included as part of the name

Yellow after the name is usually a notation from the grower as the to color form. It is very common on Phalaenopsis tags, where the name is less important. While Dendrobium lasianthera has varied color forms I have never seen a yellow.

It is a growers notation that may not be correct. It is not a scientific part of the name.
