Can someone suggest a good starter orchid? I'm new to this.
Thank you for any hints.

phalaenopsis definitely. indirect or morning light, sparing on the water, usually pretty tough to kill.

also very very plentiful--very common in nurseries and the evil big box stores. go for one with a name tag though (something that says "Phal. somebody somebody" or with an X in the middle indicating the cross. NOID's get annoying after a while. )

If you want a plant for indoors than phalaenopsis is a good starter orchid.

Other types of orchids will require higher level of light in order to flower. There are other types of low light level orchids, but none are as easy for a beginner as a phalaenopsis.

Start there and if you want there are a lot of nice orchids that would grow well outside in Washington for the summer, but you would have to bring them in for the winter. When you are willing to shuffle them each season or add supplimental lighting to you house then ask again and we will have a lot of other suggestions.
