hydroton as regular potting mix (in the uk)

Basically I am wondering if I can successfuly grow orchids in the home using Hydroton balls as a regular potting mix.( not S/H ) Would like to know how often you would need to water your plants? I presume plants can be transferred into Hydroton balls at potting time without too much adverse effect (unlike using the balls as a S/H method where new roots must be grown). I am in UK and have all my orchids in the house, though paph and phals grow under fluorescent tubes. Have tried S/H once but plant died- think the low winter temps in house had a bearing. .

Phalaenopsis dies in s/h

This thread gives some insight into using h/s.

I personally use it as a plain mix as using the reservoir just rots anything potted.

Now its gettin chilly in the UK you'll want to keep your plants on the dry side, unless you can keep the summer warmth for them. Extra circulation would be very useful as with the cooling temps mould will quickly set in.

Good luck.

i would think that would be the equivalent of mounting it; i tried it once--the plant died. but then, my house gets *very* dry over the winter. if you were in southern florida it might work ok....
