Main Paph broke from root system

Earlier this evening, while I was potting my Paph. Doctor Toot (one of the orchids for grabs I received today) that has three new growths, the 'mother' and two of its 'babies' broke off from the main root system! Now, the third 'baby' is the only thing attached to the main roots. Does the mother and its two babies have a chance? The two babies do have 1/4" - 1/2" new roots. So I was able to pot it with the other baby.

Oh, please tell me they will survive.

Not sure how they will do in S/H, but I have put a baby in coir mix a few months ago that had NO roots and it has now grown roots and is obviously going to make it! They seem to be pretty resilliant. Good luck on yours. Mike

i think you've done what you can. I'm not sure how it will be affected by the S/H but I suppose we'll soon find out.

I think the S/H will dry too much at the top of the mix for the root changed part. I think I would put that part into a fine bark mix. You might want to put a clear plastic baggy over the part with few roots, but be sure to have the bottom open so air can move in and out. Just want to raise the humidity a bit more for awhile.

Cynthia -- I'll try to raise the humidity around it. I hope thoroughly misting the top of the media daily will help.

Arlene - I got the same plant from the same source and after looking the picture up on the internet am quite excited to see this plant bloom. We will have to compare pics one day! mike

How long is a awhile? I'm guessing that it differs depending on your location and temperature but it there something specific to look for before removing the bag?

It is root growth dependent. When you think you have enough roots to support the plant mass, and this IS the larger half, then you can remove the bag. I really don't have experience with S/H, but I know of others that have had problems when the plant does not have roots long enough to get down to the damper parts of the media.

It all depends if it survives. If it does, then we sure will have something to compare.

I, too, searched for a pic of it and decided it's a keeper.
