Hi CJ and welcome to the forum. Without a pic. it is not possible to ID the species, let alone the name of your plant. If you can post a pic. at some future date I am sure that it could be recognized.

Bill

Welcome to the forum CJade.

Earlier this year , when I was going around looking for orchids, I remember seeing an orchid with very dark, almost black(blue/black?) flowers sitting on an office table (owner's) at a warehouse orchid sale. I was very new to orchids but still I was attracted to it and when I asked the owner/salesperson about it he said it is 'his baby' and that was the only one he had.

I may be totally wrong here but applying what I know now to what I could recall of that incident it was a Dendrobium. (error:+ or -100%)

yes, some florists dye their orchids, for reasons that utterly escape me... anyhoo, the only true blue orchids i've seen are certain vandas:

and of course now i can't find any pictures. but i've seen some of them in real life--they're actually blue, not purple, as are the "blue" ones in this link:

My wife's sister inlaw was given some, and yes, they are dyed.

I nearly freaked when I saw the color, I thought "Must have, Must have!", and that is when I started my research into Indonesian orchids to try and find them, and instead found the Bali Orchid Gardens web site........... the rest is history, as they say.

No electris blues, but some other beautiful exotics.

Wouldn't the dye kill the flowers prematurely?

Can anyone who does it stay in business for long?

The place I was talking about was closed in less than month. It is possible it was dyed too

Dying flowers isn't that uncommon. It's more common in the dried flower trade where natural pigments are often lost but you do occassionally see it with fresh flowers, esp carnations. The dyes are usually non-toxic and as I understand it don't effect the flower's life to any great extent. Personally, I find them unnaturally gaudy but each to his own.

Flowers are dyed by sitting the stems in dyed water and allowing the dye to be drawn up into the flower during transpiration. I got the impression that the flowers on the desk you mentioned were still attached to the plant.

Thanks Andrew.

I was actually talking about orchids with flowers still 'attached'. Not the cut blooms!

Yes the flowers I was talking about was on a live orchid.

How would most people describe the colour of this Vanda, which I believe is Vanda coerulea. My guess is the answer would be blue.

Here are some pics I found on ebay. Everyone has description of 'blue' in their names. Most of them look more purple than blue. But maybe they Do have blue in them

True blue is such a rare pigment in orchids... Some of the V. coerulea clones are VERY blue, others more purple, and some ar pink (!). I recently saw some line-bred Phal. violacea v. coerulea that looked shockingly blue. The level of commitment in line breeding necessary to see a cobalt blue P. violacea....oy gevault!

To men we say purplish- blue, women call it mauve.

THERE IS NO SUCH COLOR AS MAUVE ladies !

It's either blue or purple.

Purplish blue? Did you perhaps mean indigo or a deep shade of violet? Maybe you're still wearing your sunglasses.

They all look lavender or purple to me. Might have bad eyes, but not color blind yet!

According to statistics, one out of every ten men is color blind. Very few women are affected (not our weakness, like baldness). Therefore, we women have already outlawed "Mauve" as an outer space color. We'll continue to hunt for the blue or bluish colored orchids. So fellas, these are not BLUE, nor are they MAUVE! DANG! THEY'RE PURPLE OR THE LIGHTER SHADES OF PURPLE = LAVENDER
