I think this is a kind of oncidium.. because I heard it has what this lady calls "tiger flower"



very stiff hard leaves with tiny pseudobulbs. Pretty large plant

Sometimes its tough to ID orchids when they're not in bloom. It doesn't look like any Oncidium I know. It looks more like some of the thick-leaved Australian Cymbidiums.

Common names like "Tiger Flower" usually aren't very helpful because one name can be used for many different orchids or there may be many different common names for the same orchid. For this reason I never use them.

Unless there's a taxonomist on the forum who can ID the plant by its plant structure we'll probably have to wait until it blooms.

stiff hard leaves and small pseudo bulbs sounds more Cattleya alliance and the photo looks like Bassovola or one of its hybrids, with its long pencil leaves.

It certainly does not look like an Oncidium

Bassovola are normally 6-8 inches tall and Cymbidiums kMarch suggested are usually much bigger. The pot looks deeper than normal for Bassovola and, if it is a 6 inch pot, I would lean toward a young Cym.

leaves on this plant are about good 1 and 1/2 feet long.. some of the mother plants of this I saw have about 2 feet long leaves. hm.. that's another possibility I thought, cymbidium.. warm tolerate cymbidiums can have thick leaves right? I have Brassavolas and they are much smaller than this.. the pot in the picture is about 1 feet tall. The lady told me it will have flowing many tiger flowers.. her English isn't all that good so..

I guess I will have to wait for it to bloom then..

I'm thinking that's a Cymbidium in the findlaysonianum/aloifolium complex.

I am just wondering if some Cyms . have rounded end as on the leaves of the posted photo. I am hardly qualified to voice my opinion but jerrymeola seems to be on the right track.

I do have a few Cyms and lots of Catts and all the Catts have rounded tips.

I think they are what Cj says.. way too big for cattleya.. Cymbidium Findlaysonianum looks quiet like it.

Yes they do, especially the short thick-leaved species that Cj and I referred to in earlier posts.

It's not a Cattleya because it has a small round pseudobulb (pb) off of which come several long narrow stiff leaves. Your Cattleya will have a distinctly longer pbs with only 1-3 or so apical leaves. Brassavola (like brassavola nodosa) has pencil-like leaf structures and no "traditional" pseudobulb. the leaves are fat and roundish and function as both leaf and pb. They grow one-to-a-new growth unlike this plant which has several thick but flat leaves per bulb.

The size alone ruled out Cattleya so I go with a Cym.

I was so wrong . I checked all my Catts, BLCs, Lcs. and I saw pointed ends in many.
