New Paph

Hi all. Just received my new Paph...a Prince Edward of York...I'm very excited, but quite nervous too. He looks very healthy, planted in fine bark in a 2" pot. I watered him good and put him in a sunny spot...southeast exposure, but will be filtered by this afternoon. I'd like to move him into SH, but wanted everyone's advise first...I have both the coarse and fine Prime Agra and 3.5" pots waiting for something to be put into them. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated! I really want this one to thrive as I've waited a long time to get brave enough to try one...think I have killed a few paphs in my early orchid growing days! Peggy

Congrats. on your new orchid Peggy. I would be a little leary about a southeast
exposure. You want to give it light but not direct sunlight. An eastern to
NE exposure would probably be the best. As far as SH growing, I found out
that several of the long time growers in my area that have used this are
starting to move away from it. I will be attending my orchid society meeting
this Monday and hopefully will get a chance to chat with them to find out
why. I'll keep you posted if I find out anything.

A lovely plant to grow I'm guessing its quite small If its in a 2" pot, From past reading you may therefore have quite a wait for flowers as they like to get quite big first.

Worth the wait though

Hi. Ok...I'll move it. After I posted my question I read the Paph culture post (why didn't I do that first?????) and thought I might have it in too much sun...its the Phrags that like more sun, huh? Got one of those coming too!!!

Please do keep me posted. I won't do any replanting until I hear more opinions...

I know I will have a long wait, but all the older ones I saw were REALLY expensive...I didn't want to plunk out all that money and then not be able to grow it...have to see how I do with this one first. At least I have good help now!! Thanks, Peggy

Prince Edward of York is a hybrid of Paph rothschildianum, which, if memory serves needs a bit more light than say, a maudiae or parviflorum type paph....

http://www.goreorchidconservatory.co...h-culture.html

THat sheet recommends 2-3000 fc, which is roughly Cattleya light to low vanda light.
