I think I have a freak flower..

not the best picture.. but here it is..

I think this whole spike is rather weird. This is my NOID dend.. first time blooming..
was excited to see the green colored bud.. but the flowers don't really fully bloom.
Been like this for the past 4 days. And I think it has 3 lips!!!

First time I have seen anything like this after all those dends I have.

what do you think? There are about a dozen of flowers in two spikes. One spike hasn't
bloomed yet.. but all the bloomed flowers on one spike is like this.. or I am just a noob
who have never seen a flower like this yet..

Wow! I would thats coool!

It could just be a seasonal thing, would have to see how it blooms the next time, then the next to see if its maybe genetic.

kmarch would know

"where are you Mr March?"

THey are peloric, with petals that nearly exactly match the lip. Uncommon, but not unheard of. Just one of the may random mutations that happen in a natural system.

natural mutation meaning it will always bloom like this? LOL I am not sure whether I should be happy to have this in my collection or not.

Peloricism exists in varying degrees. I wrote an extensive post on peloricism, complete wiht pics showing various degrees of peloricism in different orchid genera, in a previous thread (scroll down about 1/3 of the way) .

I remember a clonal mutation of Santa Barbara Orchid Estate's L. anceps 'San Bar Gloriosa' FCC/AOS that popped up with three perfect and fully formed lips. I think they called it 'San Bar Trilobata' or something. Really interesting and probably thoroughly confusing for pollinators.

ok. This NOID den is getting freakier by days..

Today.. the rest of the buds bloomed.. guess what.. I have at least 3 flowers
with no petals. only 3 septals and a lip.. I think something was wrong
during it's development of flower buds.

Good news is..

my first phal. (Phal. Golden Silk) has it's first flower bloomed.. I am loving it..
It's only got 3 flower buds (well had 4.. I accidentally knocked off one..)
and the first one is bloomed.. rather nice flower, golden color with a bit of
red speckles around the core.. and the deep orangish red lip..

The second phal I got.. the Dtps. Laurel Lea Baldan has about 9 flower buds
going strong..

If the peloricism isn't consistent across all flowers it may not be genetically stable. In other words the next flowering might not be a peloric flowering.
