Masdevallia mesuresiana

After finding the name to my aussie den. I thought I would try and tag up my other plant to as close as I can.

One included Masdevallia mesuresiana which I bought online. They also stock the very aussie den I have, but luckily I didnt buy mine there.

The massie came with about 3 leaves, It now has around 6, as it is so small growth is slow. the site says it has orange flowers.

I googled 'Masdevallia mesuresiana' but only found a link to the place I bought it from.

Is that a real species name? or someone having fun.

According ot Monocot's Checklist, there's no such thing as Masdevallia measuresiana but it does have an invalid listing for Masdevallia x measuresiana. Note the difference, the latter has an "X" indicating a natural hybrid, but as I said, this is an invalid name. I looked on the Pleuothallid website, I used to judge with the woman who maintains that site, and found a reference to Masdevallia Measuresiana (M. amabilis x M. tovarensis). Here's the reference with a picture.

I'd bet there's a good chance your's is the hybrid and that someone was lazy with the tag. It sounds like it is growing well for you so it may not be that long before you can post a pic.

Cheers!

Both parents are relatively small. Amabilis is maybe 8" tall, and tovarensis is smaller, like, maybe 4-6" tall. Amabilis has a long, straight to arching stem with single flowers at the end and tovarensis has white, translucent flowers held several at a time around the tip of a stem slightly above the leaves. The hybrid, from what I hear, has a longer, single-flowered inflorescence with pink flowers that get some transluceny from the tovarensis parent. M. amabilis itself is a bright fuschia flower, not orange. It is similar to M. barleana.

They are kindof touchy about salts in their water. If you are seeing yellow tips, they may be getting too much salt buildup. Save some rainwater and soak them once a month or so and maybe flush them every so often to dissolve and remove salts in the pots.

I only use rainwater My parents grow all sorts and try and be green.

The only thing i can think of atm is temp. the greenhouse is unheated so pretty much does what the sun says.

I bring them inside when it goes below 10c but then that means they have nights of 15c and go outside during the day when it may be 14c.

That plant, with that parentage would be happy in 10-25C temps with phal to cattleya light. You probably are looking at too much heat, and the plant would be fine down to 2-3C, as long as it's leaves aren't wet and there is plenty of air flow to keep frost from settling.

hmmm ok they can stay outside with the pleione and disa plants

Would probably be better for them to stay in the same place.

Thankyou Orchidflowerchild I will keep it in there over night and take it out the greenhouse and on the shade spot when it gets too hot.

My understanding of Masd amabilis is that it is highly variable in its colour forms and that some are orange-ish though most are in the pink-purple-fuscha range. However tovarensis is white, white, white and tends to impart that to offspring. I think there's little chance you'd get an orange Measuriana like the seller said.
