My new orchid

Hi everyone,
I just got myself a Izumi orchid. That is all that the tag said handwritten and was hard to make out. Just wondering if you have any tips for this type of orchid. I love this one. Seen it in a store and had to grab it. The plant is in bloom and is a pretty big plant for a 4inch pot it is in now. Must be a healthy plant none of the flowers dropped on the long car ride home with the flower buds hitting my glove box but who to say they wont drop soon . Been a day since I got it. Hopefully I will do good with this one, because my other one seems to be failing little by little. Wish me good luck!

Do your flowers look like the following? If so it is a Miltassia Charles Fitch 'Izumi' AM/AOS. If you verify then others will come forth with culture retuirements.

Hi Revo. I have had one for about 3 years now. In fact mine has been in
spike for about 2 weeks now. Can't wait for the blooms. I keep mine in the
east window of my 4 season room. Seems to like the location. I water once
weekly and fertilize every other week. My guy is in medium bark, perlite and
charcoal. The one thing I noticed about it is that it produces only 1 spike
per pseudobulb instead of 2 (1 from each side). I sort of remember reading
that someone else mentioned this as well. So enjoy and good growing

Hi tobi, Thanks for the info , I just noticed today the top 3 buds on the spike seem to be turning yellow . What does that mean? It is to dry? Not getting enough water? The store had it sitting in a saucer with water but I read not to let the roots stay in water. The roots are coming out the holes of the pot also, I think the medium is bark and cant make out what else could be in there. It has about 7 bulbs to a 4inch pot so it is packed in there. Signing off for now.

Plants being moved around while in flower or budding can cause faster wilting. The change in the environment from shop to home sadly is enough to trigger this.

You sound like your growing it correctly, Its nothing you've done, apart from move it from the shop

Hi tom, yes whats funny is the bigger buds are actually fine and opened up but the real small ones are the ones that are yellow now. Oh well maybe if im lucky a new spike will come out of the other bulbs I do have 6 or more hehe. I was also wondering is it bad to move to water the plant. I bring it over to the sink in my bathroom is moving it over there every time going to make the flowers yellow/fall off? Also my plant has a bunch of roots coming out of the holes in the bottom of the pot can I just feel the roots and if they are still wet not to water it? Thanks everyone

Moving it around your house wont be a problem It will only be in the 'watering' area for a short time, and your house conditions will be similiar throughout so it will not cause a problem. Its only when there is a long term or extreme change will it have consequences.

roots which are sticking out the bottom will not be in contact with the medium and so will dry out faster than those in the middle of the pot. If I remember, zygos have bulbs, so the medium can be left to dry out abit before watering again

Skewer use for watering of orchids

This post is very useful, and will help you alot with any orchid
