It has been a year or more since my bloom spike died. I can't recall if I cut it or broke it. My plant is happy, the temp. and light is right, the above pot roots are numerous and the leaves are green and healthy. But... no spike, thus no flowers. Is there anything I can do to stimulate growth? I did discover the humidity is low and I am correcting that now. Deflowered

The time for bloom spikes is on the horizon. Have faith! Can you update your profile to show us where you live? If you live in a place that has definate seasons - the majority of phals start throwing up spikes in late fall when the temperature differential between daytime and night is significant. If you keep your plant in nearly constant temps this will be a problem to get many phals to spike.

I have had phals spiking at different times during the year 2 of them spiked in Feb and are still in full flower now others have spiked and flowered in the last 2 months and 2 of them were in a very poor state when i took them in for TLC so i think sometimes the plants have their own agenda and will spike when they are ready

Shell, I leave my phals outside all year. Along about December when the early morning temps drop into the 40's (around a 30 degree drop from the afternoon), they will all throw up a bloom spike and then then bloom around early February. This year my blooms lasted until late July. Be patient and you will be rewarded - unless you have squirrels in Houston. Don't ask. _________________ E-Jag

| Welcome to the forum, Shell. Do Phals spike in Feb.? I just posted a picture of phal that spiked this month in another thread. And two more orchids are coming out with spikes as well. All are NOIDs. I hope I will have two 'flowering seasons' per year for Phals.

What window do you have them in? You usually want to use an East or South window for phals. If you are using a North window, it might not be getting enough light, a major reason for no re-bloom. Also, are you feeding any kind of fertilizer? jay

Another fact to consider is what time of year you acquire phals in bloom. Commercial growers can alter the environment of their greenhouses - temperature and lighting - to force phals to bloom virtually any time of year. When you get a plant that is "off season" it may skip the season that they normally will bloom in years to come in your home environment. For example - phals we have purchased in bloom in the late spring - that bloom clear through the summer and into fall often will not start new spikes in the early winter when the majority of phals in your collection are spiking that are on normal seasonal schedules. Like Cynthia said, there are some plants that have a predisposition to bloom in the summer - but in my experience these are in the minority. Then occasionally you get a really special cross and healthy plant that just wants to bloom and bloom year round!
