Cool Flowers Fallen Off - What now?

I was recently given 2 orchids from different people. (The same orchid, though different colours, but I'm unsure what it is - the common one you see in shops and garden centres!) One is blooming and the other has lost all its flowers. What do I do now? Is that it? The leaves seem OK. I followed care instructions found on internet, but can't find out if I have to cut it back, leave it or what? Can anyone help please.

Hi we could use some more information about your plants for diagnosis. If you can get some pics one of us can identify the plants, and give you some care instructions. If you know what type of orchid they are that is helpful. You have to reply to 5 posts to be able to post pics. You could just say hi to other newbies 4 times if you wanted. If the plant is finished blooming it is generally advised to cut the spike off as far as you can without damaging the plant.

They take on the form of little birds, of lizards, of insects, a man, a woman, sometimes like a clown who excites our laughter. They represent the image of a lazy tortoise, a melancholy toad, an agile, ever-chattering monkey. Nature has formed orchid flowers in such a way that, unless they make us laugh, they surely excite our greatest admiration." Jacob Breynius

Hi Zam, I guess you have a Phalaenopsis which is the standard sold in all kinds of malls and flower shops. If your plant has blooms on slender spikes which begin at leaf junctions on main stem then it is certainly a Phal.
I would recommend that you cut the spike at its base. Read the Phal culture sheet available on this site for all info. on care for your plants.

Bill

Phalaenopsis an dDendrobium are the two types found in shops and garden centers, because the bloom young and are therefor less expensive (and they are easy to grow.)

Here is a photo of each type. I do not have a photo of the Phal leaves in the gallery but the are very wide.

Dendrobiums grow on a cane and are much taller. Do not judge Dens by the flower there is quite a variety of shapes. This one with twisted pedals is not as common but the photo shows the plant well
