Can anyone identify this?

I received a beautiful orchid plant recently but unfortunately I do not know much about it. The tag says:
Blc.Mount Sylvan 'David Littman' FCC/OSCOV
Lc. Drumbeat 'Triumph' CC 9866
EZI-GRO ORCHIDS (09) 3432761

and on the reverse side:
BLC Millennium Masterpiece

I then need to find out how to look after it....

Regards

I think it is Brassolaeliocattleya.

Okay Kevin correct me if I got it wrong I believe that your tag means that it is
Blc. Mount Sylvan 'David Littman' x Lc. Drumbeat 'Triumph'
which are the parents and the plant is
Blc. Millenium Masterpiece

I believe you can treat it like a cattleya. You can go to www.aos.org lLook under culture sheets. You can also do a search on the forum for more info.

Dear Carolro,

Welcome to the froum. It's always good to see another Aussie join the forum!

Lets start with the easy part. Your plant is a Cattleya-Alliance hybrid and should be easy for you to care for in Queensland. Go to the American Orchid Society website and click on "Culture sheets" and download the free culture sheet on Cattleyas. Give it a good read and let us know if you have any questons.

Now for the name of your orchid. Brookn has interpreted your tag correctly. Your plant is a Millenium Masterpiece and the other 2 plants listed are the parents. FCC/OSCOV means that the one parent was an award-winner. It received a First Class Certificate (an average judges score of 85 points or more) given by OSCOV which is the Orchid Societies Council of Voctoria.

The first part of your orchid's name, Brassolaeliocattleya (Blc.) has been changed and is no longer Brassolaeliocattleya. It is now, Rhynchosophrocattleya (Rsc.). So the proper name of your orchids is Rhynchosophrocattleya Millenium Masterpiece or if you want to use the abbreviation when you write out your tag, Rsc. Millenium Masterpiece.

If you want to be very accurate, the names of the 2 parents have also changed. They are now:
Sophrocattleya Drumbeat or Sc. Drumbeat using the abbreviation, and
Rhynchosophrocattleya Mount Sylvan or Rsc. Mount Sylvan

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Happy Growing!

It's not all in my head! LOL In this instance I looked some things up. I had to look it up in the RHS database to see if the tag did indeed spell out the cross and the parents. So in this instance, a good bit of that knowledge was knowing how to search the database.

And for those of us who don't know everythng (which is definitely me too) this forum is exactly the place we belong.

You DO possess a tremendous amount of knowledge in this field.

We are the beneficiaries, or better still , parasites.

Kevin, I too, am constantly impressed by your talents. There is a thread weaving around about Phal and Paph care, which starts with the sticky on phals and paphs. There are some of us that have questions, me included, about the more detailed part of paph care. Could you take a look and answer our questions? I would really appreciate it. I have the three new paphs and are mesmorized by them. Mine are warm growers. I don't know about the others. Thank you so much in advance.

If you want to start a friendly competition with kMarch the link he uses to the RHS database is

http://www.rhs.org.uk/research/regis..._parentage.asp

It is not an easy database to use. The slightest mis-spelling with get you a message that it is not registered. So I trust the data when I find a match and blame my typing when I do not. Also the database does not use abbreviations you must spell out the full name no B use Bassovola etc.

I agree scientifically that the family Laelia was totally misnamed but I regret seeing the change. A lot of hobbyist will buy plants thinking they have something new only to find they already own it. So be careful.

A grex is a registered hybrid name. Grex names are now in "modern English." In the name Rhynchosophrocattleya Millenium Masterpiece, Millenium Masterpiece is the grex.
