What is this new growth?

This is one of the orchids I received in my freebie collection of very sad orchids. The tag says its a V.Manuvadee Blue (M). The bottom of the Plant was rotted when I received it but there are many branches coming from the 2 very thick roots on the sides of the plant. Is this new growth a large new root forming? or a wayward spike?

Thanks Fred. Thats actually great news. I would prefer all growth right now to be new roots and leaves. So far all the orchids in my "nursing home" collection are doing well despite my beginning lack of knowledge.

I would say you are doing a pretty good job careing for your orchids

so give yourself a pat on the back for that one.

I can see that you have placed the Vanda in a nice wooden basket and you are also doing the right thing with asking question

well done

As Fred said the growth is a new root.

It is a good sign when the Vanda puts out a very thick root from the stem. Many times it is an indication of flowering soon.

You can let a Vanda flower at any time. Preventing the flower to form and be enjoyed does not seem to put any extra strength into the plant.

This is a large flowered Vanda with flowers about 4 inches and can be considerably bigger with age.

Thank you Jerry. I can only hope my recovering plant has flowers that beautiful. I am constantly being surprised by these plants. They looked so sad, dehydrated and neglected when I received them. A few are still sulking but most seem to be saying thanks by growing.
