Looks like a basal keiki - just let it grow alongside the mother for awhile and eventually it will have its own roots and can be removed to grow on its own (roots should start to develop along "its" base over time).

It's not uncommon for Phals to start a new growth at the base like this. For some varieties it is more common than for others. I have seen large Phals at shows that had 3-5 growths on them, making for large stunning displays of flowers when each growth has 1 or 2 flower spikes. Allow this growth to go on and mature. I would recommend that you not remove it unless there is a compelling reason to do so (like the mother plant is dying). If you leave it it will eventually spike along with the mother plant and give you a bigger, prettier display.

Charleyismydog, The orchid is a Zygo that I bought from the garden centre back in April. It was sitting on a shelf with other sickly looking orchids, all at knock down prices - this one was £2 (what a bargain that turned out to be). I am waiting to see if anyone here can tell me the variety. The other one was a Dendrobium (£3.50)which was also sickly and is now healthy and throwing out new leaves but no sign of flowers. My other orchids are all phals, so these two were a bit of an adventure. Regards, Chris

Another thread revival.

This is the plant almost eleven months on: you can see the keiki to the right.

I was just getting over my disappointment that this phal. only produced two flowers atop a very long spike this time:

But when watering today I noticed, not one, but two spikes, which are definitely growing. The one on the right is actually on the keiki:

The two other growths have been there for months without making a move, maybe they'll grow now.

Looks like the much needed re-pot will have to wait.

I love how that spike is spiraling up on that stake! That is too cool. I wish the spike on my would take off, it's just dormant as dry beans. LoL

Awesome growing!

Actually....wouldn't hurt it one bit to go ahead and repot. Might even help the smaller growth take off. I've repotted when in full spike. Just be careful not to break the spike/new spike buds.

I agree with Kat...As long as you're careful, you could re-pot now. It does look like it's outgrown its home! On the other hand, since it's doing so well, it must be happy where it is! This is quite an unusual plant!

Just a quick update. As the plant seemed more than happy I postponed the repot.

Both new spikes grew and produced flowers, (one or two have now dropped) and the spikes (all three) have started to grow again and produced more new buds. What a surprise from the disappointing start with the really long spike with only two flowers at the end of September 2008.

The plant at the beginning of March 09:

The plant today:

The first spike which orginally only produced two buds has grown two new buds.

The spike from the basal keiki:

The third spike:

The spikes on two other NOID phals have started to grow again and are producing buds:

Very well done tizzy! You may remember a while back (post #5 above) I posted: "I would recommend that you not remove [the new growth]... If you leave it it will eventually spike along with the mother plant and give you a bigger, prettier display." And now you're reaping the rewards! Nothing like a big mass of flowers is there?

Cheers!!!

Kevin, I'm so glad I took your advice to leave the basal keiki in place. Thankyou.

The plant has been flowering since last September, (albeit with only two flowers and one spike), but the other two spikes followed on and it now looks as if it still has quite a way to go with the new buds appearing.

I can't believe I was tempted to removed the long, long spike and two flowers back in September, I'm so pleased I stuck with it.

That's one nice specimen! I just love all the flowers.

I especially love yellow orchids, and I don't have a yellow phal. I just love yours. As much as I love your yellow specimen, I believe I love love love the pink noid also.

Jacqui I did follow the link in your earlier post, which led me to a picture, but no name. I apologise if I have missed something.

Connie, I'm sorry for any confusion I may be causing, but I didn't see a name on the link Jaqui kindly posted, and I must say it does look identical to mine.
