Growing outside in Queensland

Hi,

I'm visiting my sister in Townsville and am keen to buy her an orchid. She would like one that can grow outdoors. Can anyone give me advice on which type of orchid to look for? Is there anything that would be suitable for a shaded part of the garden? She also has a shaded southeast facing deck.

A

queensland australia? there are several members from aussie, and nearby, who would be happy to put their 2 flowers in on which plants would be best, but it seems cymbidiums and phalaenopsis are quite popular and easy to grow in shaded bright light areas.

when I was up in Queensland a few yeasrs ago they love growing hard cane Dendrobiums.

when I saw an orchid show when I was up there they had a very good showing of Cattleya,s, Dendrobiums, Vanda,s and Phalinonopsis orchids.

what I would do is when you get to Queensland go for a drive and have a look at the orchid nursery,s to see what is avalible.

Thanks for the responses. Yes it is Queensland, Australia. Townsville (user on the site) recommended Alice's orchids so think I'll head out there. Saw some orchids at a market this morning. Was rushed so couldn't chat to seller. Looked like they were in small stones... could this be perlite?

Woods,
This is OT, Off Topic, but I was going through a very old family picture album yesterday and taking pictures of the pictures. One of the pictures was of The Horticultural Gardens of Glascow. Since you are from there I was wondering if you would like a copy. It was taken in 1855-56. I can send it to your primary e-mail address if you like.
