| orchids and pets does anyone have any opinions regarding terrarium situations and mixing plants and animals, specifically green anole lizards and orchids? i found this from about.com: Substrate/furnishings: A substrate of peat moss and soil with or without a layer of bark (e.g. orchid bark) is an ideal substrate for anoles. Live plants help maintain humidity and provide cover - try Sansevierias (snake plants), bromeliads, philodendrons, ivy, orchids and vines. Pieces of bark and branches should also be provided for climbing and basking. full article: http://exoticpets.about.com/cs/lizar...nanolecare.htm i think it would be ok, i have 7 phals that would be small enough for the terrarium, just wondering about damage from traffic and crickets (anole food source). just wanting 2nd opinions |

| Sounds good, I have no advice for you, but I am curious to see what you will come up with.

They take on the form of little birds, of lizards, of insects, a man, a woman, sometimes like a clown who excites our laughter. They represent the image of a lazy tortoise, a melancholy toad, an agile, ever-chattering monkey. Nature has formed orchid flowers in such a way that, unless they make us laugh, they surely excite our greatest admiration." Jacob Breynius |

| thanks for the input ellen! i think the crickets are my main concern, but if their population is controlled (feeding only the amount the anoles will eat each meal) i think the damage to orchids (and the other plants) will be minimized. i have plans to just put the orchid in a pot in the terrarium, which is supposed to have a layer of bark chips, moss, etc in the bottom, but i don't think that would be a suitable medium (not very deep either) so the plan was to mound stuff near the base of the orchid pot, so that it is closer to the lights. maybe we'll even find anoles basking on the phal leaves! i'll keep the geeks updated as the project goes! |
