Mounted orchids look so cool, but...

How old should an orchid plant be to even try it? And what are some of the likely candidates for mounting? I'm anxious to try on withered cactus skeletons lying around in the yard. Could be cholla, don't know for sure, but they are beautiful.

Thanks everybody. I read this forum every morning. I'm learning so much!

Maty,

Theoretically any epiphytic orchid could be mounted. The important thing to keep in mind is that regardless of whether the plant is mounted or potted, the orchid still needs what it needs. For example, a Phal must still be kept evenly moist even if mounted. You may very well need to change your care habits when you mount an orchid you've been growing in pot. I used to grow lots of Encyclia, some mounted, some potted. The potted ones I watered once a week, the mounted ones I watered every day. Same plants but different habits and techniques to achieve the same cultural requirements.

Yes, yes, I've read several posts here about mounting. It looks like fun and I do understand the differences required for care. But I need to know if I should try mounting the little bare root orchids I receive or whether they should go into pots and mounted at another time, after they are older?

Cholla mount

I think mounting on a piece of Staghorn Cholla would be great! Lots of holes for the roots to weave in and out. You could also stuff sphag in the center to help retain moister and humidity.. I wish I had some of that laying around in Ohio!!!

If this is your first time mounting I'd mount a healthy mature plant as they will be better able to make the adjustment.

Thanks everybody. I'll try for a more mature plant.

That's what I thought Kazjak. And it's also such a nice silvery grey color. I think orchids would look beautiful on it. I had so much around I nailed it all to the wall and made a sculpture.

Sounds very pretty Maty! Keep us up on how it goes for you. I would love to try mounted but not sure I can keep things damp enough. If you can in Needles, I can down here! Good Luck!
