Amazing overnight experience with den Last night about 8:00 I placed the screened enclosure which I built to keep out squirrels over my dens. One is larger than the other and I checked out both of them before covering them. They both have a lot of new growth on them but I didn't notice anything unusual about them. About 10:00 this morning I took the screen off, looked at them and.....Good Lord! The largest one has, about 3 inches away from any other part of the plant, a stalk about 1/2" tall and atop of this stalk are 9 (honest to God) little leaves! It was not there last night. My wife suggested it may be a weed but the leaves are identical to all of the other new growth, only a much lighter green. It looks like a palm tree, with a short stalk and leaves all over the top. Man I wish I had a camera. Is this something common to a den? It looks NOTHING like any of the other new growth. It did this overnight. I promise, it isn't the Glenfidditch. ______________ E-Jag

e-jag, Hmmm that's quite puzzling..but if it's 3 inches away from any other part of the plant , then it's probably ( not ) part of the plant. A den grows out of the base of the last growth from a bud eye, therefore it will have to be attached to the other . Maybe your wife is right about it being a weed. It's been so humid lately, the only thing that can grow that fast over night is the weeds , and mushrooms ( all over my yard ). Bring it to your local nursery and have them identify it , that way you can sleep at night

Kel80 - It sure had nothing to do with ability. Never seen new growth on a den that looks like this, and it doesn't even appear to be a part of the existing plant. Can't wait to see what it turns into. If it turns out to be a weed I'm going to drop out of orchidgeeks and join orchidmorons. E-Jag

Prisana - Would agree with you but the little bitty new leaves are identical to my new growth. Will let y'all know what it does soon - it's growing very fast. E-Jag

Bill - Am going to try to do this. Don't know a freaking thing about digital cameras or how to put pictures online but am going to see if I can enlist help. E-Jag

| Jag If it is really important to know now, bring it to the Hibiscus Festival in Punta Gorda this Saturday and let me look at it. I will have a booth there. (Pelican Coast Farms) It is a fun show anyway, usually with plants at low prices. It is from 9-4 in Gilchrist Park just off Route 41 about an hour from Tampa.
