| ok with a knife and gentle see if you can scrape the back stuff off. another way would be to have a rag with a little bit of Methylated Spirits soaked on it and then open the rag so the leaf can be cleaned top and bottom at the same time. see if that will remove the sopt being soft I think it will. |

| This is a spot of bacterial rot. Cut it out. When you do so, use clean, sterile instrument and take about up to a centimeter of healthy tissue with it. Treat the fresh cuts with a bit of cinnamon or Physan. If you treat this swiftly you shouldn't have too much more trouble.

| quote] Are you saying I should scrap it so there will be a hole in the leaf left? you can lightly scrape the spot off but NOT to the point of making a hole in the plant. just try removing the spot slowly and lightly |

| can you please post a pic once you have done that so we can all see. thanks |

| I am in 100% agreement with Kevin - cut it off/out. If you don't it will spread down the leaf and then attack the crown of the plant - I know from personal experience that this is what happens - you DON'T want that! I had another similar scenerio - I cut off half the leaf with the black spot and the remainder of the leaf browned and fell off - but the rest of the plant remained healthy! Good luck - mike |

| kmarch - (or anyone!)what causes bacterial rot and how do we prevent it from happening? I have never had this sort of spot but it would be helpful to know why so I can avoid it. Also, I tend to have a 'cut now and ask questions later' approach when I see something I know is not right. Ok philosophy or should I wait on such matters? I may not know what it is, but I will know it doesn't belong there. If the only way to get rid of it is to cut, I do. I once worked for a Plastic Surgeon and first assisted her, so 'cutting' just seems to be a cure-all! (even if it's only a wrinkle) TIA!
