Its Friday! which means a new orchid :)

Another noid plant, but i dont care because its beautiful!

I bought it for the leaves as much as the flower. I am also guessing its really two plants in one pot, so i shall look to splitting it after flowering.

I do love mottled leaves

Thankyou vivienne, yours is sure similiar to mine, i will look up the two species yours comes from and see if i can find a possible origin for mine.

i have seen it sold as a hybrid called "maudiae"

http://easyorchids.co.uk/shop/produc...age=1&featured

This also shows similiar characteristics so it must be quite a popular hybrid, and i can see why

Beautiful Paph Tom. It is a Maudiae-type. There is a hybrid named Paph Maudiae, but it is impossible to tell if your plant is that because there are many, many green Maudiae-type hybrids. It's an intermediate to warm grower, also this type of Paphs is known as a "mottled leaf" Paph because of the beautiful markings on the leaves (of which I am a big fan).

Don't split the plant when you divide it. The older, currently blooming growth will not bloom again and will not grow further so you'll be stuck with a pot full of nothing. If you grow this plant on it will probably eventually put forth multiple leads which means multiple flower spikes. These look great when grown into a clump producing 3-5 flowers or more.

The form (shape) of your flower is very nice. You've chosen well!

ah that is true, i shall keep it as one, the growth without a flower looks very good, so i may well get a flower from that.

So is it alright to label it "Paph. Maudiae-type hybrid" ?

mottled leaves means it likes abit more shade than the plain green paphs doesnt it? i was only going to let it get morning and evening sun.

I was totally taken aback by the size of the flower, it makes my white paph. flowers look tiny

Tom,

Yes, a tag that read Paph Maudiae-type hybrid would be accurate, probably about as accurate as we will be able to get. There are many green-maudiae-type hybrids and they are continually bred for improved form and size. Some of these hybrids are getting quite large flowers on them. I saw one today at the orchid festival that had a dorsal almost the width of the palm of my hand; it was probably about 8cm wide.

You are also correct in your understanding that mottled leaf Paphs do not need as much light as other orchids. In the US, people can bloom them in a north facing window. I always grwe mine in an east window and they seemed to do well there. I think they would like your east window.

I did notice your new growth is almost as big as your blooming growth. I would think if it does not bloom this season it will most likely bloom next season.

Again, good choice!

From a closer closer look they may be joined under the bark medium, but could be two separate plants. But i shall leave them alone for a year, the medium looks very good.

I hope it will show signs of a new growth over the coming months. Weird i know, but i almost prefer new growth to a flower.

but then i guess a new growth means a new flower in paphs.

The second fan is almost certainly a new growth, not a second plant, so just leave it alone.
