dendrobium orchid

Hello Everyone,
I am from Texas and have just started enjoying the beauty of orchids. I purchased a dendrobium orchid and it has a new growth to the main stem. It has white roots. I know I sound really dumb, but I need to know if this new growth needs to come off and planted or leave alone. I would appreciate your help.

Thanks Vwier

Leave it alone.

If it is from the base of the plant it is just new growth. If it is growing on the side of the cane, then it is called a keiki (baby) and when the roots are 3-4 inch's you can remove it and re-pot it separate.

Keep coming back with questions and enjoy the hobby.

Thanks Jerry,
The kieki is only about an inch and a half, so will hold off till it is 3-4 inches and plant. I use scotts orchid mix. Is this ok to use or is there something better. I have another orchid I inherited and it has never bloomed. I have no idea what kind it is and I do not know how to post pictures. It has wide long leaves.
Thanks again
