Spider orchid native in Australia

This is a cutting given to me. Anyone have 1 growing. I presume it is like a Terete Vanda in it's culture.

Native?

I think that is an Arachnis - what are known as spider orchids in SE Asia, not to be confused with our native ground orchids commonly called Spider orchids (genus Caladenia, Petalochilus, Arachnorchis etc.)

I believe you are correct in that they would grow similarly to Vandas.

Thanks Dan, at least now I can look up this orchid's culture.

I'm just going by the "spider orchid" label you gave it though... It does look like one but that's no guarantee.

G'Day Brisbanite

Looks more like a Epidendrum (crucifix) orchid to me, but may be wrong.

Cheers
Bernie

I was thinking that too but Epis don't usually put out aerial roots so high up like that.

Vanilla Orchids do put out aerial roots as they grow longer and they use the roots to cling to something as they grow. Sure looks like one to me!

I'm with Bernie. Looks like an Epi to me. I have some that put out roots like that. I plant them in soil. I put several radicans in the ground over a year ago to form a row and they are doing well and spiking.

Arachnis.jpg

I have attached a photo of an Epidendrum along side my "mystical" orchid. Comparing the 2, I would say not an Epidendrum. I will have to wait for a flower

It is probably arachnis flos-aeris (sold as spider orchid).

There is a guy that sells a heap at the Caboolture Markets.

I have one, but have never had it reflower.

Hi Tansy, thank you for that. I will just have to see what the flower is like. There is a shoot coming out near the top. I know they are supposed to have lots of direct sun, water, and not too much fertilizer (unlike Vandas).
Does the Caboolture markets have good orchids for sale?

The market used to have a lot more orchids for sale, but one of the best sellers recently stopped selling. It still has some, although most are just resellers. If you like a variety of plants, then they have some great stuff there, such as broms, the occassional hoya, and garden plants.

I was there yesterday, and got a large mystery ground orchid for $8 (along with a heap of other stuff). Will have to wait til it flowers to see what it is. Looks like a calanthe.

However, if you like species stuff, try Robert Trost's Strawberry farm, which is off the highway just north of Caboolture.

Thanks Tansy, yes I have been to the Strawberry Farm at Elimbah. He does have some great orchids. Will post the flower on mine, when it debuts.

Hi Lynn,

Nice to see you again, too. I have been on occasionally, but haven't posted much lately.
