Different color blooms on the same spike branch

Hey everyone, I have a phal that has white blooms, but the very last flower to open on the first spike is yellow. How is that possible?

Is this common, has anyone else seen this?

Did you just buy it and the last bloom opened at home several days later? The lighter blooms probably opened darker and faded with time. Phals with venosa in the background will do that.

Do you mean it may have some Venosa Orchid genes in it? I bought this orchid 4 months ago, only 2 flowers were open on it, this is the only one that opened a different color.

Why does the home environment cause a potential color fade? Less light? It had a lot of flowers, but they have all come and past the same color, these are the last flowers on the first spike, the second spike which only first started blooming a month ago has the same white color as the rest. I will keep an eye on this flower and see if it fades.

In this ones case I really think its in the gene pool of its parents cross. If its been in the same sppot as the blooms began to open for you and nothing has changed in the environment (temps, light etc) I think its a genetic thing. Very cool though wonder what color they will be next time ?

that is very neat.

i know that sometimes flowers on the same plant can look different due to changes in microclimate (one side of the plant is closer to the window, or closer to the lights, etc) but usually not that extreme.

I have seen flowers that are different on the same spike. Saw one that had colored edging on most of the flowers and on a couple one sepal was edged and the other was solid colored.

Phal venosa is a species that is in the background of many yellow phal hybrids. It tends to make them bloom with a saturated yellow color and fade over time. A cooler temp at bloom time can also darken the blooms. My guess is the background though. Take a picture a month from now and compare.
