Is this an orchid?

I was given this plant by a friend at work who said it is an orchid. She told me her mom got it as a gift but doesn't know how to care for it. She also told me the leaves are very sensitive to sunlight, which I was able to verify on the way home. It got a few more sunburns only because it received some direct sunlight through the car's window on the trip home (which lasted only a few minutes).
I have no idea what it is potted in. The leaves are very soft and tender, also very shiny (the ones that are not burned).
I have it next to my cymbidium (which I also don't know for sure how to care for) and a couple feet behind my gorgeous growth-bursting phals. It has received the same care as them, but with less light exposure and it has developed some new growth. That is all I've been able to observe so far.
Is there any way to know if it is really an orchid?
How should I care for it, other than to keep it away from the sun?
PS. I've had it for a little over a month now.

It's hard to say from the pictures but to me it looks most like a Paph of some sort. If it is, I think it should do well in similar conditions to the Phal.

My gues as well. A paphiopedilum. Should do just fine with your phals. I personally would cut off the burned leaves and seal the cuts with cinnamon to try to prevent fungus entering through the weaker tissue.

Check the roots and if they are "fuzzy", then it is probably a Paph. If it is it will be happy in Phal light.
