orchids outside in San fernando , CA

Hello everyone ,

I am looking for some orchids to hang in a hanging basket that is hanging from a lemon tree. The house faces the east and the sun hits the backyard around 10 am till sunset. The tree gets light from 10 am to about 4 I believe maybe 3 pm.

I am looking for a orchid that is vigorous and will bloom more than once a rear ( if possible ) We are having 80 degree weather all week so far lol. Tonight the temps where warmer.

Please post a list of some orchids that may sound like a good candidate

I have lived in LA before I moved here, and I do remember the night temps going to freezing or close to freezing sometimes. I have seen people mentioning Cyms growing nicely outside in CA. My sister-in law is growing them outside in San Diego. But I think you are having too much sun for them were you want to place them. And they bloom only one time a year, usually.

There is a link posted in a thread about Den. speciosum (thanks, Renee and Epipactis12) in the Care and Cultivation section, which shows some orchids that are grown outside at the Santa Barbara Orchid Estate. That may give you an idea about species.

Specimen Orchids

As to the amount of sunlight, it will depend on your lemon tree. I grew phals under my lemon tree two years ago, but this year we had it pruned and thinned, and I had to rig shade cloth to protect the plants from sunburn. It will depend on the size and thickness of your tree.
