my first orchid show

theres an orchid show this saturday in the next village. im going to attend to see what the local growers are like, as i would like to join the local group, but being a 16yr old guy im sure you can understand how its not quite "cool" to be in an orchid club. but sayin that i dont mind and wanna get involved more.

i was just wondering though, if there are local commerical growers around me, what are the chances of me being able to get a part time job. having basic experience of my own, and needing a job i see it as great opportunity, but wondered what the commerical growers on here think of it? orchids being delicate things, i cant imagine you employ anyone

I think a lot will depend upon what kind of growers are in your area. Most of the growers in my general area (about 60 miles in any direction) are small single greenhouse growers - one person or one couple businesses. Some are just ways for people who love orchids to finance their "habit". At the total opposite end of the spectrum 700 miles away there is the largest orchid grower in the US with a million square feet under glass - they must have a HUGE paid crew. In between I'm sure there are companies that hire a few part time helpers from time to time to help with the tedious busy work. Good luck - mike

If you were in Florida, getting a part time job in a nursery would be easy.

Orchids are not delicate.

Most nurserys hire untrained help and train on the job. It would only be a question if the nursey was big enough to need help.
