do u recommend a Cym. for home care??

hi all ,

i have been thinking of buying one of those amazing cymbediums that has 9 spikes and lots of flowers , i like the way they look ! but i read in the AOS culture notes that they don't recommend Cyms being grown at home. how accurate is that , does anybody grow a Cym indoors successfully? i know it depends on the climate, but where i live we get very bright sun starting april until december, and i can provide a western window exposure with 3-4 hours of direct sun light , but the climate i have isn't humid, i'd say about 30% average.

do u think i should go ahead and try one , by the way it costs 80$ where i live so i kindda want to be sure before i buy one !!

thanks a lot

How cool do your winters get?

Many people I know, including myself, grow them outdoors but bring them indoors to display when they are in bloom.

I do have a few Cymbidiums growing indoors. But I have had them only for about 4 months or so. I bought them to give them a good home .

Recently I noticed many new growth sprouting on all of them.

I use a humidifier 24/7 and also a heater/fan to keep the temp around 27C(80F).
They are also under broad spectrum lights for about 12 hours per day

Since they all survived the winter months , I assume they will be growing well from now on.

I am not sure if this answered your question but at least it will give you an idea of growing them indoors.

Attached are the Cyms.

good luck

The thing about growing Cymbids indoors is that inside they susally dont' get the cool autumn temps necessary for blooming. Outdoors here in Melboune Australia and places like California the autumn/winter temps are perfect for initiating blooming.

There are a group of miniaure, warm growing Cymbids. Cymb. sinense is among these, they're sometimes called the Chinese Cymbidiums. They are often grown indoors.

Here in South Australia our climate is very similar to yours DDS 2007.

I have my cyms outside all year round, and have them under a large beach shade, see this thread http://www.orchidgeeks.com/forum/orc...ng-spaces.html, on the first page.

Like Kevin March I take the smaller plants inside when flowering for show. The larger ones are too large to move, and a 60cm pot just doesn't look good on a table setting.

Cyms are extremely hardy plants. Go for it!

thank u all for your replies

we have moderately cold winters, temperatures reaching 4-3 C outdoors, inside the house sometimes it gets as low as 15C , but i can provide heating if needed. in summer season it can get as high as 27C indoors , 35C outdoors. the issue is , again, humidity. i can't provide more that 30-40%. is that enough for a cym?

kmarch , i wishi i can acquire a miniature, but the thing is it's veeeery hard to find orchids near i live , so i try to buy whatever i find.

anton and pikevi , your cyms look absolutely great and healthy ! God i'm so envyous! now i'm SURE i'm gonna get one (orchidmania just hit!!)

happy growing and thanks for replying

DDS2007,

Your temps sound ideal for growing Cymbids outdoors. If you get frost in the winter you might want to cover them or bring them in on those nights. Go ahead and give them a try. And there are lots of Cymbid growers here to help if you need it.

Hey DDS2207- If I remember correctly, you posted a picture of your little indoor 'greenhouse' arrangement in what appeared to be a very sunny room. I think your cym would love it in there. I grow cyms outdoors all year and protect from direct, hot sun in summer, where the normal temps are 85-100 degrees F. (somebody have a celcius equivalent for her?) The hotter it gets, the lower the humidity, rangeing 8-30% or so. Very dry, no rain for months and months, and my miniature cyms LOVE it. I just need to make sure they are watered well. I don't mind growing outdoors because I see them thru every window in the back of my house and we spend a lot of time outside all year. I just adore my cyms and they are sooo easy to grow. I think you and YOUR climate will do just fine!

For those in the US....I saw nice Cym's at Sam's club for around $25.00. They even had two or three bloom stalks. I've only seen these elsewhere for $40 to $60.00 So it was a great deal. I bought 3....one for myself and the two others for mother's day gifts.
