| I was thinking the same thing! Very nice color on it too. |

| While I do not know this particular cross, it does look like it has a healthy dose of Laelia tenebrosa in it somewhere. Sometimes havign a clus to one of th parents can help one figure out the cross. |

| I lean toward an Epidendum Cattleya cross. That is because the bulbs are more elongated than Encyclia and the flower has the classic look of this hybrid. Also it is blooming season for Epic here in Florida. The color I have not seen. If it was a smaller flower (2-2 1/2 inches I might guess Epic Charlie Brown) but this flower looks more like a L purpurata in shape and size but not in color.

| I am of the opinion there's neither Epi nor Enc in this cross, certainly no reed-stemmed Epi. I say this based on the size of the flower. Most Epis and Enc are relatively small flowered and reduce flower size when crossed with Cattleyas. There is that one Enc that is quite popular these days. It has chocolate petals and a reddish lip. I can't remember the name of the species though. Anyway it is one of the larger-flowered ones and could account for the colour, but then again so could Laelia tenebrosa which can also account for the shape. I suspect it is something like Laelia tenebrosa x Lc Mini Purple. There's definitely tenebrosa in there somewhere and probably quite a bit of it. It's not Charlie Brown. Both the form and colour are all wrong for that one. Last edited by kmarch; 04-20-2007 at 01:52 AM. |
