New Phal

Just to say thanks to all for the tips on the cymb I was given as a gift. The result on the snails/centipede problem was that I returned it to the florist. They will replace it at some point. The advice I found on the web suggested stripping the roots and repotting it as the only way to ensure the snails would be gone. That seemed too tricky for me so chose to return it.

The good news is that I bought a new orchid today at an orchid show at the Botanic Gardens in Glasgow. If you are ever here visit it.... I love it and it has a great orchid section. My new orchid is a Phal Mini Mark (Micro Nova x philippinensis). I've put it in my bathroom at a frosted window. It is in loose bark and there is some condensation inside the clear pot.

Should I water once a week? Should I mist it every morning?

I will post photos asap - it's a beauty.

Hi Woods, congratulations!
Phalaenopsis are very rewording and easy to grow.I suggest, since you are a newbie, to use the skewer method to control moisture and prevent over watering:
http://www.orchidgeeks.com/forum/newbie-questions/1099-skewer-use-for-watering-of-orchids.html

Your location is cool, in that environment misting is not necessary, easily can trigger fungus development.
Good luck, and I'm looking forward to the pictures of your beauty!

If you can see water through the clear pot it is not too dry. You can go longer without watering it.

Orchids have to be under watered for a considerable time before it will hurt the plant while over watering can do a lot of damage fast.

Hi,
Another addition to my orchid family - photos to be posted soon promise! I am not sure what it is. The florist replaced the snail infested cymb with an orchid I fancied in the shop. She told me what it was.. I didn't recognise the name (or remember it) and when I got back to my flat there was no label!
The flowers look like a larger version of the mini-phal I have (5 petals and what I would call a mouth) BUT the leaves are longer and rounded at the the end. My mini-phal leaves have a point. Anyone have any ideas... obviously this will be easier once I manage to borrow a digital camera but am just keen to know what it is.

Hi Woods - I just love the mini-phals! I now have one and it is an unbelievable grower; I bought it at the San Diego Orchid Show recently from a grower who specializes in these. It has a spike in full flower, another spike coming up, a new leaf in progress AND new root buds. The plant is in beautiful condition and handling all this growing beautifully. If I hadn't seen it myself I wouldn't have believed it! Will get pic's as well because I know there will be some non-believers.....(I don't blame you) Enjoy your new plants.

Hi PhalPal

My mini-phal has two upright flowering stalks (with some buds still to open) and one flowering stalk with buds going out to the side. I thought about making it upright but quite like the look of it out to the side. Prmoise that photos will be on soon.

Does anyone know what my new plant is? - see my previous message
