Unhappy My jewel baby has been attacked... :(

I got this little gal from Carter and Holmes a while back, and I have to say, easiest growing orchid I've had! And so pretty! She said most folks buy this one for the glittery gold that is on the leaves.. so beautiful in the sunshine.. I just followed her instructions and it has been a happy little clam... until...

This morning I went outside to do my watering like I always do, I keep this one on a table on the balcony, kind of tucked back (all the others who need more sun sit on the balcony ledge or are hanging over the edge on hooks from the ceiling) and so it gets some splotchy sun, and sits in a disposable bowl because I put a little bit of water in the bottom and it sucks it up through the bottom... Cant get water on the leaves because it will make them get weird spots, almost like what splashing bleach on your clothes will do. And I found the little guy tipped over in the bowl!! I picked her up and realized that the stem had broken and will not stand up on her own anymore ... or maybe something got into it... We do have feral cats, raccoons and even possums (In downtown.. funny!) that have come onto the balcony... The leaves are not withered up yet.. I just took these pictures...

Does anyone know if this piece finally comes off, if I can maybe stick it in a pot and it will grow? From now on, she stays inside, on the wire rack near the window Shes a very soft type orchid and so delicate..

Darn critters, as if bugs didn't keep us busy enough Sorry to hear about the damage done to your little one I, can't help with that one, I'm not familiar with it. She is a beauty even without blooms can't wait to see her with them Hopefully somebody will be on to help and good luck

Most of the Jewell orchids can be propagated by sticking the broken end into water. They can also be stuck into a terrestrial mix but I prefer the water method so I can see the roots and know when they have enough to survive.

Sphag and bag. The humidity makes them throw roots out like it's going out of fashion.

Can someone explain that technique? I've heard of it, would like to try it asap. I'm on my phone right now and probably won't be able to get to a computer for a few days cause I'm out of town.

Ummm... self explanatory I would have thought :P

...but I'll explain

1. put some damp sphag in a plastic bag
2. throw in your busted bit of jewel orchid and seal the bag
3. put it somewhere where it isn't going to cook.
4. wait and pray

I thought maybe you would have it in a pot planted in sphag, inside a baggie... I'm still pretty new to the whole orchid scene, that's why I'm posting in the newbie section.. sorry to sound so dim..
