How do i know if i have any flower stems developing?

Where i cut my last flower stem on my phal, there are 2 green things (?) growing from exactly the same place. They're bright green with brownish tips. I've had loads of similar looking things growing in various other places which have ended up being roots. Are these going to be the same or am i finally getting some flower stems?

They are most probably roots because of the way Phals grow.

Flowers set when the plant is chilled (under 50 for about a month). Since you have had a set of flowers it is unlikely that any dormant buds would have stayed dormant during the first chill and temperatures are warming now so a second chill was unlikely. So it would have had to have two things happen - buds not start in the first chill and then a second that activated the buds. This is not impossible but uncommon.

I am surprised by your description of the growth since roots are normally gray with green tips. Stems are normally thinner and evenly dark green.

I noticed that the next spike usually grows from the base of the next leaf's base. This is the place where you can expect it to appear. So the new things might be roots. Of course a picture could help to determine for sure what they are.

[I don't know what triggers the spiking process in my case: indoor, with air conditioning, never under 70 degrees. (Light variation?)]

Haven't been thru enough bloom seasons to be an expert, but the references I'm using say that the two largest causes for failure to bloom are inadequate light and lack of sufficient nighttime temperature drop. This doesn't reallly address what promotes blooming, but it is kind of a backhanded step towards that goal.

Orchids are very adaptave and will flower in less than perfect conditions. Temperature is very significient with Phals. Commercial growers will heat the plants in the Winter to discourage flowering and chill the plants in the spring to have plenty of flowers from Valentines day throught Easter and Mother's day.

Sorry, my camera has decided it doesn't want to take any photos at the moment and won't even turn on!
I had a look at one of my other phals and it has the same things so i'm guessing they're roots.
I got quite excited when i thought they were stems! Never mind, i have a keiki growing, so that's one thing to look forward too!
I know this is a bit off what the thread was about, but as a guestimate, how long does a keiki normally take to grow before it can be potted on it's own?

When the keiki has a bunch of roots about 3 inches long, it's the time for separating.(I can't say how long time takes this process, I've never had a keiki, yet...)
