phalaenopsis buds drying

Hi guys,
I did not present myself so here it goes: My name is Catalin, I live in Romania and I love orchids. I grow mostly phalaenopsis but I also have some cymbidium, paphiopedilum and zygopetalum. The greatest success I have had is with phalaenopsis but the others are coming along too.
I have had a problem with a few of the phalaenopsis buds drying out. Not all on one spike. What's happening?
I get it with or without spraying and in all conditions (summer, winter, humid, dry).

Thank you!

Welcome! "Bud blast" is very frustrating and often discussed here. If you havent moved your plants recently, the only reason I get bud blast is watering. Orchid plant's sensitivity shows up when in spike/bud/bloom. If too much water, they can blast buds, same with too little water. Are the roots healthy and have you moved the plant?

Thank you for the welcome and reply.
If I move an orchid I do not worry but I have one that has not been moved for more than a year and out of 6 buds so far it has blasted 3.
I did not know the condition was termed "bud blast"...maybe that is why I did not find much using the "search" feature.

The orchid in question has heathy roots and gets watered once a week. No standing water, temp 18-20C, humidity 60-70%, leaves are ok but has not grown a new leaf since summer.

I have a NOID (rescued) Phal about to bloom, and I'm a little concerned that the biggest bud should be open by now. I'm not going to ask how long it should take, as I know that's going to vary (and I have no history with this plant), but does the appearance of a bud change if it's going to be stubborn and not open? Or does it dry up and fall off? Just curious...thanks.

I can't post links on my phone but maybe someone will post a link to the Phal culture sheet for you from AOS so you can grow it with the culture needed for them to thrive. I had to do some tweaking to my environment for them. Bud blast is the pits! Had it many times just slight or drastic changes can cause that in the environment.
Good luck

I'm petrified that my phalaenopsis buds will blast. I haven't had it happen before but I've sort of had a benevolent neglect thing going on then.
Now I have more time to spend on them, check on them, what have you and I'm afraid that I will mess up some minute requirement (water too frequently, slight change in temperature I donno!)..

I empathize.

I've had the same thing happen! Out of a spike of 10 buds, 4 so far have 'blasted.' darn frustrating. I'm blaiming the weather...dry and cold as heck here in Virginia. I went back to the place I got the plant and they're having the same problem...maybe it's a genetic thing for this cross.

argh. I agree though, annoying and frustrating because now I can't show it. :P

I don't know much about bud blast. I've had it happen quite a few times, but I didn't know what the exact reason was, maybe low humidity. I'm sure your environmental conditions are way different than mine. Sorry, I wish I could help.
