Cymbidium ID

Hi,

I picked this orchid (pl. see the photos) yesterday on a sale (50% 0ff= $24.99). It appears to be at the end of a bloom cycle since the flowers do seem a little withered and some are dropping. It was in a tiny cracked (open) plastic pot so I potted it in a clay pot , taking as much care as possible not to disturb the roots.

(This morning flowers seem to be a little better and none had dropped overnight)

The label just said it is a Cymbidium. Any idea what the species could be?

Thank you.

There are so many cymbidium hybrids that all look alike that there's no way to know unless there's an ID tag. It's a beautiful plant, so just enjoy your NoID Cymbidium without worrying about its name. A word of caution to those buying plants from box stores, supermarkets and other such places - most plants you get from these sources won't have ID tags or, if they do, they will be generic (e.g., "white phalaenopsis" or "cymbidium orchid"). If you care about the plant's name (or think you might in future), don't buy NoID plants.

When I was trying to id mine, I came across a site with lots of Cym. photos: http://www.collectorscorner.com.au/O...#37;20Jean.htm
Also, Stephen Early of Australia has a nice site on Species and primary Hybrid Cymbidiums. On the homepage he says he will help people identify their Cyms. Cymbidium Species - Stephen Early

Thanks Ellen, gerneveyn.

Actually I stopped buying NOIDs from Jan,07. This was too good to pass. The plant is almost 90cm high and the leaves seem healthy and the price was good.

gerneveyn: I went ot the site and saw two that resemble the flowers that I have. I will look around some more before I contact him.

You will never be sure. But if you like it, you like. Period. To heck with ID. I waited a year for a piece of a noidy from a friend. Some are just worth having, and I like the pink lip. Very nice.
