My dendrobium lost all its leaves.

Hi folks,
One of the plants I purchased on-line in late November lost all its leaves as well as the spikes all died. It was one of those bare root orchids I purchased and either the cold weather shocked it or it had difficulty adjusting. Anyway, I understand dendrobiums do loose most of its leaves so that doesn't worry me. The nice thing that is happening is that it has three or four new spikes growing. It is somewhat funny looking, very, very naked looking, no leaves but four new spikes. Is that typical after such a short time for spikes to be growing? And lastly, can a plant continue to thrive with no leaves? Thank you for any help in understanding the growth patterns here. Mary

Hi Mary,

As long as the canes are green and firm, there's no need to worry. Since there's new growth, even less to worry. Sometimes, spikes can emerge from the older (naked) canes. Just keep caring for it as you've been doing.

I buy a lot of those small dens (they are very cheap in when buying in the thousands). They are extremely stressed. The roots are intermingled and getting them out of growing tray means ripping them apart.

For me losing 5% is not important, but the grower should have gotten new roots started before selling it. Fortunately you have done this yourself without a problme.

Your results are normal and you are past the point of possibly losing the plant. It should look good next spring and you should have flowers this time next year.

Jerry.....you are always wonderful with your advice. I think I will be ok with the dendrobians but phals still a struggle. I'm still planning to talk with you about a spring purchase of one or two orchids but I will not do this until the weather is much, much warmer. Thank you for being there. mary

Arlene.....thank you. You have been very encouraging. I think my two dendrobiums will survive. The new spikes are healthy despite no leaves on the canes. Now if my three phals can survive, I will be very happy. I may in a few weeks stick them; the remaining roots and leaves into a zip-lock bag and see what I can generate with that method. Thanks again. Mary
