| Not sure what to do..
Hello! I just got a few orchid plants, maybe about 2 months ago. All has been going pretty well. Unfortunally, this one plant, a vanda, has been kept indoors, in a bright room with no direct sun. But I am going out of town for a month and have no one to care for my plant. So I place this one outside with my other orhids, mostly phalaenopsis, who have been doing very well outdoors under a giant palm tree, they stay in shade all day. After two days, I went to check on it, and was super sad to see all these yellow spots. Buth on the leaves and on both sides of the center "stem" where allt he leaves jut out from. The root system also seems to be less plump and more dried out. I used to just mist this guy when he was indoors once or twice a week, just a few squirts. The leaves had started to turn yellow while he was indoors, thats why I thought moveing him outside might be good. Im going out of town in less then 10 days, and I dont want to come back to a dead plant. Any suggestions what might be wrong? I live in central florida, so its pretty hot during the day and there is lots of moist air. Thanks alot! I wanted to attach pictures of my plant to this post, but I am unable to do so- I have them posted on photobucket, but even I have trouble searching for them. :/ I think if you search for my username, teazorg, and then hit profile you can see an album with them, maybe? idk. I tried. I just want to get a second opinion on my plant. |

it looks like a severe case of sunburn to me teazorg....and maybe you watered it all over before you set it out? it looks like it.....oh well, it will eventualy recover, it will just bear the scars for some time.....you need to provide more shade for it....thats what it looks like to me.....gl

I am not a pro Vanda grower but I do have a couple and I agree with dounoharm about the burn (I have burned mine before). You had this plant inside in what I would deem low light conditions, probably too low for a Vanda. Then it was put into very bright shade with some direct sunlight that burned it throughout the day. I would recommend leaving this vanda outside where it does not get any direct sun after 11 am. Vandas do like high light, even some sun, but it would have to be slowly acclimated. A sudden change in location is just to fast for it to adjust to. Seeing that you live in Tampa I would water it daily, in the morning if possible. By watering I mean hose it down. Misting isn't going to be enough in this kind of heat IMO. I think it will be okay but you might have to prune off some of the leaves if they are badly burned. HTH Shann~ |

Too much sun too fast, and likely dehydrated. Vandas take oceans of water, especially in Tampa in summer - and we're having record heat now. Soak the hell out of it every day or twice a day. Find a neighbor who can turn a hose on it every day while you're gone. The roots look pretty good so it should pull through, but in Tampa, outside, in the summer, it is probably impossible to overwater.
