What is this?

Hi guys!

Yesterday i rescued this Phal from ending up in the garbagebin at work.
So I took it home with me, and it's been in a sugar/water bath today, since the leaves are very shriveled.

Just wondering about one thing - what is that weird growth coming out of the crown supposed to be?

Thanks in advance!

Looks like a terminal spike. If that's what it is, the plant won't flower again. You can grow it for the foliage though.

There are a couple of threads here on the forum about terminal spikes. Mayres documented his experience with one in an especially good thread. Maria's got it just switched around. Terminal spikes can go on to flower but yours looks a bit deformed. The orchid will not produce any more leaves from the crown but may produce more spikes. With good care your phal will start a new plant growing form the base of the old one which can grow and mature and flower again but it may take some time.
