Talking terrarium growing

Hello, I've been a member since august, however, this is my first post. I am diving into the world of terrarium Orchid growing head on, and thought I would see if anyone had any ideas on which varieties to grow, or other hints/tips. Thanks!

I have an established vivarium, with orchids. Your best bet is to stick with compact/miniature plants, as some of the more common flowering orchids (dens, phals, catts, etc) tend to get too large. I have jewel orchids in mine, which have beautiful irridescent foliage.

Ludisia discolor and Macodes are two very popular jewel orchids. The flowers are not big or showy but the foliage is magnificent.

Macodes are smaller and a little more delicate. Ludisia grow like wandering Jew vines and can take a lot of abuse.

Hey Jerry and "Fabolusus" , thanks a lot for the info. I have a 4" pot of ludisia discolor that has been doing well on the windowsill for quite some time... I guess it's time to transfer it to the tank. Is it best to layer with something like coconut chips, or to keep everything individualized for easier removal, watering, etc. and just moss around the pot for aesthetics ? Thanks again, Star

It depends on what your drainage system is. If you can drain runoff in a resevoir, and not just leave it sitting at the bottom level of the terrarium then you can plant most orchids. If not, then I would suggest using baskets, like those available at blackjungle.com, and plant above a 1-2 inch layer of pebbles, followed by coco fiber or moss. The layer of pebbles would act as your "resevoir" for runoff and would protect the roots of whatever plants you decide on. The baskets allow for maximum drainage and make for easy removal.
