kcopley is on a distinguished road
forever unopened buds

I am quite a newbie here, the first orchid I have not killed has finally budded, but the buds have been on the plant since Thanksgiving, almost 2 months, without opening. There is other growth happening - a new shoot, new buds, etc, but no flower. There is also this sticky, nectar stuff on the leaves that seems to have dropped from the buds. Am I doing something wrong? Otherwise the plant (phaleanopsis) is extremely healthy!

Very common. Depending on the type of Phal it is still early in the season. I can not buy yellow Phals till around Mother's day.

I had a Cattleya bud take a year before it opened but you Phal should open in its own time, you are doing nothing wrong.
