| Dendrobium Pegasus Pink
I am new to growing orchids. I got a den. Pegasus Pink from lowes for like $3 last year when it was done flowering. I've had it out on my back porch since it started to warm up and it seems to like it there. It has started a new flower stalk and has 2 flowers that haven't bloomed yet on it right now (it's still growing). The older (I think its called) Psuedobulb's leaves are turning yellow. The bottom most leaf turned and now the next one up is turning. But where the old leaf was there is something growing from the plant. What is it? and are the leaves turning ok? Thanks, Britt |

sounds like normal ageing of the plant....the old psuedobulbs will shed thier leaves....and you might have either keikis forming or another blooming spike, its hard to say...you need to post pictures....and welcome to the forum!

G'day Britt Looks like a nice healthy plant, leaves turn yellow and fall of from aging. I note it is in spagh. moss be careful to watch your watering as it is very moisture retentive, but as you have had it for some time looks great. You will have to wait and see what grows, as Dounoharm said will either be a keiki (baby plant-let) or flower spike. Cheers Bernie

Yeah it came in a little pot of bark inside the bigger pot of spagh. I just took it out and put it in the bigger pot and so far so good....I only water like once every week and a half or something. I let it dry out before watering again. Thanks |

There is a flower spike coming out on the smaller plant with 2 buds so far, but the larger one ionno. Its either that or a baby plant thingy or so they say |

and I think there is another keiki growing up on the top of the new growth of my plant...I thought it was the plant growing but i think i see a root....is that ok? or does it mean something bad that I have 2 keikis and no more plant growth ...and only 2 blooms?

Thanks for the photos Britt. You have one keiki at the top of the cane. The shoot at the bottom of the cane has come out higher than is normal. It is trying to escape the moisture/wet below. Keikies are a self preservation mechanism, not what you want, with this type of Dendrobium it is a sign of some thing wrong in the root area. Your plant is dropping leaves because the roots can't support them. The 2 flower re-bloom is also a sign your plant is not happy, it has produced flowers solely for the purpose of getting pollenated so it can produce seed for a next generation. (these plants are clever) What you need to do Britt, remove the sphag moss from the top of the pot for starters, let us know if the plant is potted fully in sphag moss or is there another type of media under the top layer of sphag moss. Don't worry, your plant is young and strong and will bounce back once you sort out the moisture problem at the root zone. Bill |

yeah its completely in spagh i just bought some orchid bark potting mix to repot my other orchid. The plant came in a tiny pot with bark and then was planted in the pot its in now in spagh. when i bought it i just tookit out the smaller pot and left it in the larger. So I should repot it now in the bark? and thank you |

Nothing special you have to do, same as any orchid. You need to clean up the root area, cut away all dead roots, there is no such thing as a may be alive root, if it's questionable, get rid of it. When you pull it out and start cleaning it up don't think you have to pot it straight away like normal garden plants. If you are not sure about any thing, stop, take a photo and we can talk you through it. Bill |
