Newbie Question: Phal with bad roots, needs to be repotted

My boyfriend bought me a Phal yesterday and I noticed that when I lifted the little clear pot it was in the roots looked really tangled and like they didn't really have any room to grow or breath in the small pot.

I did some research on how to properly re-pot them, and when I took all the potting mix out and got the roots clean there were a ton of rotted dead roots, they were squishy brown/yellow looking and withered. I cut those off with a knife and applied some Cinnamon to the cut ends. But the roots that were still green, healthier looking, still don't look .. great. I placed it in a slightly bigger pot, with some new potting mix and will water it tomorrow.

My question was whether the roots that I left on the plant are still good or not?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated since I'm completely knew to growing Orchids.

I attached some pictures of the plant, if they don't open for some reason, I also posted the pictures in an album in my profile, which should be public.

hello and welcome to Geeks!!

you did a good job identifying the bad roots and removing them. from what i can see of the remaining visible roots, the look pretty good. just water judiciously until the plant gets acclimated to its pot.

you also have another flower spike emerging at the base, so you'll have double the joy soon

and if you haven't already gotten this, here's the culture sheet on Phals from the AOS:

AOS | Phalaenopsis

best of luck and keep us all posted!
