| The new growth will be a stalk with leaves named cane, which is also a food and water reservoir. The mature new cane may develop on its top a stalk with flowers. (I'm not a clever, but have a den similar to yours... Hoop!!I read again your post, isn't really clear where the new growth appeared...If next the old ones, than it's as I said. Aniko. | New growths that occur every year come from the base of the plant. Something developing on the side or top of a cane can be a keikis or flowers, and not just from the most recent. Dens are one of the few plants that can do a repeat blooming on a cane, so old canes can have flower spikes.

| If the new growth is developing on the cane and not at the base of the cane, you must wait until it starts to throw roots, and when there are at least three inches of roots (it can be many one inch roots) then you can take it off the plant and start a new plant, if you so desire, or leave it on and let the mother plant take care of it. |

| I don't see anything that looks like something growing. If that center tip of the short cane is starting to lengthen, then I would say that the original small cane was just simply not done growing.

| Thanks Cynthia. It certainly is growing. The plant was a baby - from a Cairns nursery via local hardware store. Cairns (about five hours north of here) is much more humid than Townsville. Looked sad and neglected so I brought it home. It could be that its growth was arrested and has begun to resume. Townsville |

| Latest development Just out of interest - one of the leaves on the D. Burana Green went yellow and fell off - this is what the (slow) growing tip looks like now. By the way, the plant is getting a new stem behind (back shoot?) too. Townsville |

| That tip of the cane was just finishing its maturation. That new growth from the bottom on the left is the important growth. It is the beginning of growth for the year. Hopefully it will be larger than the last growth, the one with the fallen leaf.
