My orchids are spread all over the main rack- jewel orchids in the terrarium, catts on the top shelf, odontoglossum and oncidium on the middle shelf, and phals along the outskirts

What wattage of HID bulb are you using and have you measured the footcandles being delivered from various distances from the bulb? I'm interested in setting up a HID fixture myself and would like to know what kind of light intensity. Unless you vent the heat outside I was told that 400W was probably the maximum you could go...(?). Thanks for posting the pics - interesting to see what others are doing....

It's a 400w metal halide/hp sodium convertible. Right now I'm using an EYE-Hortilux blue MH. My digital camera doesn't display the f-stop, so I don't know what the foot candles are. I can tell you that my 2 catts that are on the top shelf (approx. 8 inches from light source) are thriving and have both bloomed , right now they are putting out roots and both have new leaf/pseudobulb growth. I have 2 phals, both were on the bottom shelf (approx 48 inches from light source) and both are very healthy and both are putting out new growth. As for venting, I have an exhaust fan in the window and three oscillating fans that are all on the same timer as the light. The temp. in the far side of the room goes up 5-10 degrees when the light is on. My central air keeps the room on the cool side in the summer and in the winter it really doesn't matter anyway, I usually just keep the heat turned down.

How fun!

What a fun set-up! It looks like all your plants are quite happy. I wish I had room to do something similar.
