You have a Vanda and the roots are almost always grown out in the open air. Actually they can be difficult to grow in pots. Many will not accept a pot.
It is one of the more difficult Orchids for a beginner. They require a lot of water. Commercial growers water twice a day. Unless you have an automatic watering system you should water as often as possible and soak all the roots in a bucket of water for 4-5 hours a week.
It seems they can always take more water.
They require very high light levels almost full Florida summer sun all day in order to flower. You can bring them in when the weather gets down around 40-45 but they can accept dips lower. Put it out in the brightest sun the rest of the time.
