| i am not an expert but it sounds like a fungus. i had that recently. need to cut it back 1/2 past the brown and then flush with a good fungicide and most likely replant in new medium. then water carefully for a while. without pictures, it is hard to tell but sounds like what one of my cat's got last month. hope it helps

| Sheaths often dry out before opening. Do not cut it off or you will be cutting the bud as well. If a bud has formed in the sheath it will bloom. Keep in mind that not all sheaths bloom.
