I know that Cattleyas love bight light. During the winter, a lot of sunshine enter my house through the south facing windows, from 11 am to 5 pm. I usually shade them whit slats, which cast a pattern of stripy shadow on my plants (now I'm talking about catts only). It's practical, because I can adjust the amount of light, on the other hand it could be too harsh on the sunny spots.... Is that a real concern, or just paranoia ??? Aniko.

| You need to realize that glass filters a lot of the light already. Light falls off exponentially with the distance from the window. The slats have some of the same effect of leaves sheltering a plant from heat buildup where the light moves over the plant.

Yes, I realized that, but I want to be sure before is too late, so I'm going to measure the light intensity with my camera - I've found your post Jerry; will help me to do that... (My plants are very close to the window) Thanks for both of you.Aniko.

Aniko, if you are going to measure the light, you need to get back far enough so that the light meter covers a large enough area to average the bright and dark pattern of the light. If you measure only the bright pattern, I expect it will be too high, as you are measuring full sunlight reduced only by the window glass. I think you should feel the leaves. What you want is for the pattern to shift accross the leaves at a rate that will not heat any part of the leaves too much before it moves on to another position. I would also expect that if the pattern is from horizontal blinds, that the time when the pattern would shift the slowest would be at about noon time. Verticle blinds would be less of a problem. Feeling the leaves is the way to make sure this aspect is not a problem. Cynthia

What is worrying me is the low speed of shifting of the sunny spots, strong about 4000 foot candles. I checked the Catt leaves, are worm. For Mtssa is definitely too much. I'm experimenting to find the right place for each - is not easy in home conditions. After dealing well with Phals, it's a real challenge for me...Thanks very much for help. Aniko.
