Sphag and Bag?

Hi, I've heard of this technique mentioned a few times and tried to search the board for it, but couldn't find specific directions. Could someone explain it to me? I was hoping to save a few waterlogged phals at my grandmother's house. I know I'll probably have to snip off a lot of the roots and I've heard that the sphag and bag technique is good for regrowing roots.

Thank you! According to that, maybe sphag and bag isn't the way to go. These phals will probably have some viable roots left over.

I have tried spag and bag for several things, but they have not worked. I have not tried with phal.

I would think that it would not work, since the phal is already waterlogged, and has viable roots. I would just pot it, and make sure the phal is steady in the pot, and keep it in a semi shaded spot.

For my problem ones, I mount them with lots of spag, and keep the roots fairly moist. I seem to get better results this way.

Good luck.

So what situation is sphag and bag supposed to be used for? Is it supposed to be only for dehydrated chids?

It raises humidity, I have done mine with small division to promote root growth. So instead of tossing a sickly little division away, I throw it into some spag and bag it to see if it will get some roots, so far so good!!!!!

When do you remove the bagged plants?

I have several Onc. alliance plants which I bagged up as all the roots were rotten. I have noticed a few green pokey starts of roots, but they are tiny! They are about the size of a pencil lead.

Do I leave them in the bag until they are at least an inch or so of roots grow or would that rot those roots as well?

I tried to leave the largest root end (about 1/8 inch long) out of the bag today and it dried up and turned white (it was green) . I tucked it back in the bag until I know what to do next.

Dendian-

Onc roots are very thin and small and are injured easily...(at least in my experience) I say leave them in the bag until they're a bit longer than repot. You don't want them too mature or they won't adjust to the new growing medium. The roots grow to fit the medium, not the other way around...just watch the air flow and moisture. good growing!
