A good inexpensive place to start is Ortho's All About Orchids Book available at many different types of stores - from Walmart to Home Improvement Stores to Book stores, etc. You can obviously find out a ton of information by reading the information on this and other orchid forums, the American Orchid Society (http:\\www.aos.org), many online vendors have great information, etc. I have found over the past two years some GREAT books at Borders in their bargain book section for only $5.99 - even one sponsored by AOS.

The best how to grow reference is this forum.

But I also recommend the Ortho book.

Mayres & jerrymeola,
I have read the Ortho Orchid book, browsed the AOS web site and the Geeks web site. Thanks for the direction. The Ortho book speaks of scented orchids in the descriptions of orchids. Are all orchid scents pleasant? In expanding my collection, scent will definitely be a consideration. Are there any scented Phalaenopsis? I didn't see any? Are there any scented orchids that will do well in southern Wisconsin?

Hi Richard...yes there are quite a few scented phals out there...And no, not all orchids smell pleasant...there are some that smell weird...but are quite unique in their own way...
