Den nobile?

My orchid arrived on Mothers Day with 14 flowers in bloom and they're still pretty, although wilting a little. From the description that I proveded you all before, we thought it was a Den. Nobile. Do you still think it is? (I received a flag that I couldn't post URL's until I have 5 posts and this is only my 3rd so the pictures will have to come later).

It's growing nicely and a new shoot is coming up. There is a new flower on another stalk (cane?) all by itself.

There are two leaves next to each other that have up to three rather large holes in them. The largest hole is about 7mm long x 3mm wide. I'm guessing from what I've read here that these are bites from something but I can't see anything on them. They've been there for about a week and no other leaves are effected. Should I cut them off?

I've read that too much humidity is not good, but does that apply to Dens too? I live in south west florida where the humidity goes near 100% at times during the hot summer. I'd like to put it on my screened porch if it's OK for my orchid. The sun comes in from the south west.

I'm so glad that I found this site and I thank you all for the ongoing education.

It's probably a nobile-type hybrid dendrobium; Dendrobium nobile is a species plant that isn't often seen as a holiday promotion plant. Nobile-type hybrids have Den nobile in their "family tree" as one of the plants that makes up their parentage, and they all share the same type of culture, which is high light and heavy watering while they are growing, followed by a cool dry rest, during which they should receive very, very little water.

So yes, species or hybrid, your plant would like to be outside getting some very bright indirect light and frequent waterings! I'm in the SF Bay, and I keep my nobile-type hybrids outside year 'round (and now that I have an actual Den nobile, it'll stay outside, too!).

Your Dendrobium is not a species. The name you gave in your other thread about it indicates it is a hybrid. Den Dream is a Yamamoto hybrid. Yamamoto is famous for his nobile-type hybrids. But then we run into problems. There no orchid with the name Red Empire so it's anyone's guess what that is. It essentially renders the orchid a noid until it gets sorted out.

This just goes to show how ignorant I am about orchids. I didn't even know what a noid was.

What do I call it? A Den noid? Is nobile in it's name?

Thanks

Nobile would not be in it's name. Just save the tag as it is and remember that Ren Empire isn't a registered hybrid name. Where did you get it? I'm wondering if the seller could shed any additional light on the cross.

My son living in Michigan had it delivered to me from a local florist. I guess I should give them a visit and ask them where they got the name that was on the label.
